RIFUGIO CAMPOGROSSO

January
2015 had begun and we wanted to go on a snowshoeing adventure. Snow was not in abundance yet so this trip turned into a hike, but it was still worth it. Rifugio Campogrosso is about 1 hour and 10 minutes northwest of Vicenza and very easy to get to. The rifugio is at the base of many trails and has parking and a great outdoor area overlooking the hills. Our initial plan was to hike the entire trail 170 but we only hiked to Malga Boffetal due to time restrictions. We also took a slight detour to climb up to La Madonna Della Sisilla. PJ and Reesey stopped before the top because it wasn't a trail made for dogs or people leery of heights. I made the climb up to her and the views over the Asiago plateau from the top were beautiful!

The statue has quite a history which can be found here. It seems that the American military in Vicenza may have been called to help lift the statue to its current place. The website is in Italian though, and the translation isn't perfect so I don't know how much is fact and how much only a story.

The trail also has a lot of war bunkers hidden in the rocks of the mountains.
