June 26-27
Our road trip began on Thursday, June 26th. PJ and I had planned to leave around 6 in the afternoon, but due to
“extremely important” work issues, PJ didn’t return home until 8:30 at night. This caused us to arrive at our first destination at 2am which was a little disappointing. That aside, our first
stop was in a smaller town called Samobor, Croatia. It is about forty minutes west
of Zagreb and four hours from Vicenza. The town is small but it has many restaurants and cafes which are known
for their delicious food [Rudorska greblica and Samoborske are some great sweet options]. Here is a good website to learn more about Samobor. We stayed at Apartments Paradiso, which was wonderful and located in the perfect position.
The area is located in the middle of the Samoborsko gorge which also has a lot of hills, pastures and forests. Old ruins of Samobor Castle, built in the 13th century, still remain on Tepec hill.
I would also like to make note of a famous person from Samobor, Ferdo Livadic Wiesner. He was a prominent member of the nationalist Illyrian movement in the 19th century, piano composer and writer. Mainly it is a big deal because his last name is Wiesner [my maiden name]!
Sadly, the next morning I realized that my camera battery never made it into my camera so I only have a few cell phone images.
