VILLA SARACENO, FINALE DI AGUGLIARO, ITALIA

August 26, 2015

Villa Saraceno is located on an artificially raised area of land on the banks of the Liona Canal. Sadly, the villa is in need of some repairs but they are working on gathering the funds to restore the building. Only the mansion house and one of the agricultural buildings remain. The original drawings included a dominating mansion house flanked by farming wings on both sides with towers at the corners.

The villa was built around 1545 for Biagio Saraceno, who was one of the patriarchs of Vicenza. To account for the possibility of flooding from the canal, the floor level of the rooms were raised by five Vicenzan feet over the already raised landscape.

The main building is designed with simple lines and is structured on a podium, exposing the basement windows below. A large staircase flows up to the elegant loggia, where one walks through the three arches supporting a triangular tympanum. Stone is used solely on the door and window frames. The central hall is T-shaped with rooms disbursed symmetrically and proportionately on both sides. The frescoes within the villa are attributed to Brusasorci but are in need of some restoration as well.

Currently, the villa is owned by the Landmark Trust, which is an English architecture charity that is restoring the building. It is worth noting that one can actually sleep in the villa. It accommodates up to 16 people and dogs are allowed!
