Stubaier is a
ski/snowboard area that, at its peak, reaches 3210 meters. It is the largest ski
area in Austria and you can pretty much keep skiing until June if you would
like. Austria labels their runs differently than in the US. Trails with blue
are the easier ones, red trails are intermediate, and black trails are expert,
however many people seem to go into the powder. There are 26 cable cars and
lifts, and many lodges where locals seem to lay out and tan during their lunch
break. There are several mountains in this area where one can ski and each
mountain can be reached through a bus line that stops at each base.
Our day started at
2:30am because the bus was leaving at 4am. It took 5 hours to get there by bus,
however, people who had driven in the past said it took them about 3 hours by
car. PJ was forced into skiing because they did not have ski blades and I
rented a snowboard. We were able to do runs all day and have a great lunch at a
lodge about midway down the mountain. It was -10 degrees C out, but in the sun
it felt warm, so we ate lunch outside.
We both managed to
survive without any broken bones or concussions, and neither of us fell off the
mountain. However, my body was sore the next day and I have more bruises than I
did before our ski trip. Overall, a successful day!
