AN AFTERNOON IN VERONA

Two weeks ago PJ and I took an afternoon trip to Verona. It is about 45 minutes to the West of Vicenza and a very easy train ride to get there and back. We managed to hop on the bus from the train station and rode into Piazza Bra. The first stop was to the Arena. Every first Sunday of each month is only 1 Euro per person to enter, which was perfect because it was the first Sunday of March.

The Arena in Verona still functions for concerts, Operas, and events. I am hoping to buy tickets to a few things while we are living here. It is an open air theater built in the 1st century AD and is the third largest Roman amphitheater. It is considered to be one of the best-preserved amphitheaters in the world. An earthquake destroyed part of the arena in 1117 but you can still see four arches that are still standing.

After we explored the Arena we headed to grab an early dinner in Piazza dell’Erbe and then headed to the house of Juliet to take a quick look at the balcony and statue. It is a huge tourist cluster but I think everyone should see it at least once while in Verona.

We wanted to get back to Vicenza at a decent time so we wondered through some of the off the beaten path streets and headed back to the train, this time walking and stopping for some gelato. There are so many things to do and see there, but they will have to wait for our next visit.
