VIENNA, AUSTRIA

It has been a very long time since my last post! It has been over a month and we have now moved into our apartment and started settling in. We found an apartment on one of the most historical streets in downtown Vicenza and are surrounded by local pasta shops, bakeries, and butcher shops as well as one of the best gelaterie, Gelateria Brustolon, right down the street. We even lucked out and have a small terrace!

We have ventured out quite a bit and found many delicious restaurants in the area, as well as many fun places to try at night. The other night we tried L'Oste Sconto and it was delicious! We have even discovered a place for PJ to get his eggs and bacon in the morning [Borsa Bar]. They also have happy hour and live music on some nights. There are a lot of hidden places to try and we are working on that.

We have taken a few trips since the beginning of February so I will write about our trip to Vienna, Austria in this post.

We left on Friday, February 15th and returned on Monday, February 18th. Flights were expensive so we opted to take the train to Venezia, hop a bus to Villach, Austria, and then hop an Austrian train [OBB] to Vienna. It took about 7 hours to get there but we were able to take in the sights along the way.

We stayed at Wombats City Hostel Vienna - The Lounge, which is a different one than I had stayed at before, and booked a 2-person room and private bathroom. I would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Vienna in a group or alone.

On Saturday we ventured into downtown, our first stop was Stephansplatz and we explored St. Stephens Cathedral , which has 230,000 colorful glazed tiles and a south tower that stands 136.7 meters tall.

We spent the first half of the day wondering around downtown and saw many sights including:

Pestsaule – A well-known sculpture in Vienna, which was built in response to the Plague.
Hofburg Palace
Spanische Hofreitschule – The Spanish Riding School building.
Reiterstandbild Erzherzog Karl
Theseustempel
Parliament Building

We then had lunch at Schnitzelwirt, which served two huge pieces of wienerschnitzel with cabbage and potatoes. Lunch was delicious!

PJ and I finished our day going to das wiener riesenrad, which is a large Ferris wheel to the north east of the city. While riding the wheel one can look out over Vienna, and on a clear day even see the mountains. The Ferris Wheel was originally built to celebrate the Golden Jubilee but had to be rebuilt due to a fire that destroyed it.

On Sunday we decided to explore outside of the main city area and headed to Schönbrunn Palace, where we walked around the property and ate some apple strudel.

We were also able to travel to Zentralfriedhof, which is where people like Franz Schubert, Ludwig van Beethoven, Arnold Schoenberg, Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann, Ludwig Boltzmann, and many more are buried.

The Belvedere was our last stop for the day but it was getting dark and cold, so we walked the grounds and headed to get ready for dinner.

We found a restaurant called Figlmüller, which has been around since 1905 and is tucked away on a small side street. They make the best potato salad you will ever eat! We will definitely be going there again when we go back!

After two days of exploring Vienna PJ and I have come to the conclusion that Austrians are by far the nicest people we have ever met. Whenever we looked lost or pulled out a map someone would always stop and ask how they could help us. On top of that, the subway system was always on time and completely clean! NYC should take note! When we initially got on the bus headed to Vienna, our bus driver, who was Austrian, exclaimed “We love Americans!” and I have to say, we definitely loved our stay there.
