Trieste is a hidden gem in northeastern Italy. It is right on the boarder of Slovenia and Croatia and gets somewhat overshadowed by Venice, Verona, etc. In 2012 LonelyPlanet listed is as the world's most underrated travel destination.
Trieste was one of the oldest parts of the Habsburg Monarchy and was considered one of the most important ports. It was the fourth largest city in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and became a hub for literature and music. Today it is a great city to spend the day walking along the waterfront, grabbing a caffè in Piazza Unita d'Italia, or meandering through the streets. The buildings still show a strong Austrian influence. Sadly, some could use a little TLC, but they are still beautiful!
Where have you taken me to now?? |

Outside of the downtown, but still worth a visit is Castello Miramare. It was built for the Archduke Maximillian of Austria in white Istrian stone and is perched on a cliff above the Adriatic.
