PJ and I spent our last hours of 2013 and beginning hours of 2014 in beautiful Venezia, Italy. We began the afternoon meandering the small winding streets and seeing what we could stumble upon. For a city that has a larger NYE celebration, it was pretty quiet. It was actually pretty quiet until 15 minutes or so before midnight, which was great!
We managed to find a cozy restaurant on one of the side streets, then found a few places to relax before the big event. While walking along the water we walked into a nice hotel and found ourselves having a cocktail and some snacks, sitting in large comfortable seats, with a man playing the piano.
About 20 minutes before the final countdown we headed to Piazza San Marco. What will we toast with at midnight!? No worries, there was a store on the corner of the piazza that sells bottles to go, plastic cups included. It was crowded by this point, but we pushed on and got some Prosecco before time ran out.
After the clock struck 12 it was time for some fireworks. Everyone cascaded to the Piazzetta San Marco. As we stood next to Palazzo Ducale, a beautiful Venetian Gothic building, and through the columns of San Marco, we watched the fireworks display over the canal.
A perfect way to start 2014!
